Why Interior Paint Could Be Your Selling Secret

Things you don’t want to hear: why painting your house on the inside the BEST thing you can do to sell it.

There is a reason so many realtors tell you to paint your house – it’s true! When buyers are scrolling through listings and see your lime green kitchen, your teal bedroom, your purple living room, and your orange bathrooms, their reactions are often less than favorable. Comments like “ugh,” “wow, that’s a lot of color,” and “eeeek!” are not uncommon. Having bright colors throughout your home does a few things that negatively impact the way buyers view your home:

1) Bright, jarring colors throw off the buyer from appreciating the true space around them. Instead of focusing on the layout, features, and potential of the property, they may find themselves fixating on the overwhelming colors. This can lead to a less enjoyable browsing experience and decrease the likelihood of further exploration.

2) You want buyers to be able to envision themselves in the home – and most cannot do that without a neutral, light background. By painting your home in neutral tones, you make it easier for buyers to see themselves living there.

3) Multiple colors all over a home make it look disjointed, less maintained, and create a sense of chaos and emotional reaction instead of pleasant opportunity. Even if this isn’t the case, buyers may subconsciously associate bold colors with more work or expense to repaint. A cohesive, neutral color scheme, on the other hand, creates a sense of unity and suggests that the home has been well-maintained.

4) There is nothing like the smell of fresh paint – having a freshly painted home makes the whole space appear cleaner, brighter, and ready and waiting for its next occupant.

5) If you are selling your home, you want to cater to potential buyers, not yourself! The less personal your house can present, the BETTER it will present and the faster offers will be received!

Let’s take a look at a real-life example on how powerful interior paint can be in a home sale.

After sitting on the market for a little while and not gaining the traction it should have, the seller’s recognized the need to paint their home in neutral tones. Almost immediately after the home was re-listed with its newly painted interior, buyer interest rose, and an offer was received shortly thereafter.
